  • Physical symptoms: Headaches, tight shoulders, that weird stomach knot that shows up during daily standups?

Red alert indicators (time to take action):

  • You dread opening your laptop in the morning
  • You're snapping at family members over stupid stuff
  • You're procrastinating on tasks you normally enjoy
  • You're working longer hours but feeling less productive
  • You catch yourself thinking "I'm terrible at this job" more than once a week

4. Communication: Making Your Humanity Visible

Here's something I learned in therapy that applies perfectly to remote work: people can't read your mind, and they can't help if they don't know you're struggling.

Design Meetings for Humans: Start every meeting with a brief check-in. End with appreciation or acknowledgment. Build in buffer time between calls so people can mentally reset.

Remote development isn't going anywhere, and neither are its mental health challenges. But just as we've learned to write more maintainable code and build more resilient systems, we can learn to create more sustainable work practices.

The key insight from my dual perspective as therapist and developer is this: mental health isn't a nice-to-have or a personal weakness to overcome. It's a core system requirement. When our mental health degrades, everything else follows—code quality, creativity, collaboration, and ultimately, career satisfaction.

  1. This Week: Implement one physical boundary (dedicated workspace or closing ritual)
  2. This Month: Schedule regular check-ins with a teammate or friend in the industry
  3. This Quarter: Establish metrics for monitoring your mental health and energy levels
